The challenges of digital transformation in the healthcare sector in the next meeting of Vagone FMD
What are the concrete applications of the metaverse in healthcare? Can we already speak of a “mediverse” composed of medical sectors such as virtual hospitals or interactive educational spaces in the metaverse? This issue was addressed by the seventh meeting of Vagone FMD. From 01 to 100 in the Metaverse, held on January 11 Binario F. Here is a summary of the ideas that emerged by OneliaOnorati.
INTRODUCTORY SESSION
Alfonso Molina, Scientific Director, Fondazione Mondo Digitale – the people interested by the initiatives fielded by FMD often have difficulties or lesser opportunities, like refugees, unemployed, and elders. Illness is another condition of fragility. The metaverse has influenced our cognitive capabilities and this is reflected in the health sector and in our approach to illness. At present, the metaverse is a vision, an environment that will host a range of converging technology, an ecosystem that will slowly become multisensorial and address various perceptions, driving the cognitive change that I mentioned earlier. The result of this will not be a formula, but rather a thought, an idea, a taste of what the world will be in twenty years.
Costanza Andreini, Public Policy Manager Italy, Meta – one of the most natural applications of the metaverse is the medical area. Meta is extremely motivated todrive this application.
Pier Luigi Ingrassia, President, Italian Society for Simulation in Medicine, and Coordinator, Technical Table on Health Simulation – our reality, notwithstanding our contacts with doctors, is essentially to ensure the safety of patients through lifelong learning courses. We promote research and network sharing through a series of tools that promote the “analogue system.” We have been involved, for example, in experiments with 43 interactive clinical cases in a range of areas with 16 professors. In April, the Health Ministry officially recognized simulation in healthcare education. Italy is the first European member states to approve official guidelines. Naturally, this will all improve as the AI component increases and we will no longer have to rely on intermediaries.
Andrea Silenzi, Healthcare Director, General Direction for Health Prevention, Ministry of Health – the great added value of the metaverse can interest distance teamwork and disaster medicine (the most difficult and sporadic context) which has a significant volume of cases for specializing doctors. Initial critical points include the low basic digital skills of Italians. This calls for investments to implement technology such as the metaverse.
Massimo Canducci, Chief Innovation Officer, Engineering – there are those who believe the metaverse will never exist, while others think it will replace reality. Although the metaverse is not completely shaped yet, it is under construction. Its tools include research, innovation, and new technology. Indeed, augmented reality is an important pillar. The concept of the metaverse appears to be an evolution of the Internet, but this could change over time, depending on the technology that is involved. Decentralization, interoperability, and user respect are three characteristics that we believe will characterize the metaverse.
Federica Battisti, Professor, Department of Information Engineering, University of Padua – besides virtual and augmented reality, there is mixed reality, or the superimposition of computer graphics on virtual reality. PNRR funds will allow us to fund further research on digital twins. This will allow us to create virtual models of individuals to study them. The “mediverse” is a combination of blockchain, the Internet of Things, and AI, as in the case of the immersive technology we use to study emergency situations. We still lack tactile feedback, but this is being worked on through a variety of tools, including gloves that allow us to gauge the temperature and feel consistency. I believe four steps for the evolution of the mediverse could be: holographic construction (the simplest to create models), holographic simulation (adoption of models in virtual reality), creation of reliable avatars (realistic), and fusion of virtual reality and references to reality. This will require an international collaboration. The technology is around the corner. We already have instant codec avatar. Meta will allow us to develop such avatars from our smartphone webcam.
MartijnBoosman, Founder SimX (in video) – our metaverse proposals for the medical sector are not meant to replace traditional education, but to integrate it. It’s a “team training technology” that allow individuals in different places to simultaneously participate in simulations in the same environment.
Giacomo Gensini, CEO,Nume Plus – “SimX” is one of the first experiments on emergency contexts. Instructors oversee patient conditions based on how people act.
SIMX EXPERIENCE
PatriziaGarzia, childhood neuropsychiatrist – I foresee useful experiences for autism and nutritional disorders.
Serena Ricci, biomedical engineer, Centro SimulazioneCesmav, University of Genoa –I dream of a space in which we can all insert our products and services, a library where to deposit experience.
Antonio La Greca, Policlinico Gemelli – we encounter difficulties in quickly training doctors due to the complexity of the necessary preliminary procedures. It would make a lot of sense and be useful to have a virtual world in which to practice.
Stefania Alvino, Daiichi Sankyo Italia Spa–How prepared and willing to use technology are healthcare operators? This could represent an obstacle to the adoption of the metaverse.
Andrea Mingoli – surgeon and Director of Surgery, Sapienza University –our requests concern training team operators. In the past, we have experimented on interactive dummies, but this presented issues and always required external coordination. It would be important to have technology that could allow more immediate interaction. For example, a trauma team needs to practice and coordinate before real-life situations arise.
Valerio Mogini, Director Healthcare Organisation, Italian Red Cross – for the metaverse to be truly successful in healthcare, it will need to involve various dimensions: triage, labs and hospital porters. It’s a functional technology because it eliminates the distances between professionals, but also because it frees us from the need for connection and work phases, creating internal synergies amongst people who never see each other.
Alice Mannocci, UniMercatorum researcher – the metaverse will have to add, rather than replace elements, and can only be applied to certain aspects of student education.
Marco De Luca, Paediatrician, Meyer Hospital, Florence – we have a lot of students and doctors who work on the same cases due to our limited resources, but the possibility of experiencing more cases individually could be very useful.
Gabriele Lorenzini, Nexus Project Coordinator – to date there is no emergency-level curriculum of non-technical skills to use it.
Stefano Sironi, IR&TeCAreu 118, Lombardy – I find the metaverse useful for some didactic objectives, but not very functional for practical technical skills. For example, it is interesting in terms of learning about large-scale emergencies (road accidents, collapses, earthquakes, fires) in terms of multi-disciplinarity with other involved institutions (police, fire brigade).
Mirta Michilli, Director General, Fondazione Mondo Digitale – We involve those in the field to help them dream and imagine the development and application of theseideas, thinking about who will use them tomorrow, those who still are far away and unreachable today.
Alfonso Molina speaks at a secondary school talent meeting in Turin
Today the Turin Museo del Risparmio, will host a Campus on Financial and Entrepreneurial Education entitled “Finance and Economics for a Better Society.”
The objective of the two-day campus is to understand if economy and finance are wrong per se or if something is distorted in their application. Work will begin based on “Economics for the Common Good” and “Finance and the Good Society,” respectively written by Jean Tirole and Robert Shiller, two Economics Nobel Prize winners. A debate with prominent figures from financial and academic institutions will allow participants to delve into the factors that have led to the most recent crises, the relation between finance and ethics, and new tools and approaches (ESG, impact finance, innovation and digitalization) and with which finance can contribute to prosperity and reduce inequality.
Alfonso Molina, Scientific Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale and Personal Chair in Technology Strategy at the University of Edinburgh, will hold a presentation tomorrow morning (Dec. 15, 10:00) on “Digitalisation and Inclusive Development of Society.“
The “I Fuoriclasse della Scuola” Project on secondary school talent was developed in collaboration by the Fondazione per l’Educazione Finanziaria e al Risparmio and the Ministry of Education, University and Research. Partners also include the museum of Savings and Confindustria.
The impact of new technology on the music industry, a debate at Binario F with Vagone FMD
After the first three sessions dedicated to the use of the Metaverse for cultural heritage [see news: Metaverse Trials …], training [see news: Immersive Technology for Didactic Activities] and the tourism sector, yesterday, Binario F hosted the fourth meeting of the new Vagone FMD. From 01 to 100 in the Metaverse Programme, developed with Meta. Policymakers and stakeholders explored the operation of the Metaverse to identify possible areas of application, especially for public utility. Short interactive sessions allowed participants to enjoy a complete experience that could be replicated various times to focus on new tools and scenarios.
Here are the ideas that emerged from the fourth appointment – Music in the Metaverse – as summarised by Riccardo Russo and Onelia Onorati.
Alfonso Molina, Scientific Director, Fondazione Mondo Digitale – The Metaverse has emerged as an enormous force. We are facing an exciting new vision. There are many metaverses, an ecosystem of elements that converges towards a new, imaginary world, an immersive, multisensory experience that allows us to feel inside another world. These meetings explore the Metaverse and all areas of relative interest.
Flavio Arzarello, Public Policy Manager, Meta Italy, Malta and Cyprus – The Metaverse is an absolute priority for us, as you can surmise from our company’s name. We have a vision of the future. However, one thing ust be made clear: we will not build the Metaverse alone. We are just one of the many companies that are developing a new approach to the Internet. The Metaverse will allow us to enjoy experiences at 360 degrees, making previously unimaginable things come true. Two main trends must be emphasised. The first is what guides our work: technology takes hold when it solves people’s problems. In terms of music, more specifically, we want to move from the age of possession (CD, vinyl) to an Era of Access. The second issue is that we need to develop accessible devices that are increasingly less cumbersome. Moreover, experiences must be interoperable. As an evolution of the Internet, the Metaverse will have an architecture organized in levels and provide a series of services. Users will be able to move from one service to another. This will lead to the development of a creator economy, in which anyone can propose content.
Gianluca Polegri, Director, Digital Solutions Division, Engineering – Today, Metaverse means a lot of things. It is a three-dimensional Internet for immersive experiences. It is important to understand how technology evolves and which services we will use. However, we must also understand who these solutions involve, what are their targets, and consider any collateral effects, especially cultural ones. We have to ask ourselves: what can we do with it? What type of technology are we using? What is the business case? What is our starting point? We must understand what can represent added value to the integration of these solutions. We must be aware that any sector can be exploited in the Metaverse. And the big difference is its social nature.
Enzo Mazza, CEO, FIMI – Music is like water, it runs everywhere. If there is a new technology, music will pervade it. The industry is seeking to create value and wealth through it. Fandom will play a central role in the Metaverse. Thanks to technology and social media, the world of music has changed profoundly. Artists and fans are much closer than ever before and practically have daily contact. In this context, there are many different opportunities. The world of merchandising can be recreated in new formats: fans want to be close to performances. We can create virtual content similar to that of the physical world to provide fans with a new perspective and allow them to purchase or access content, virtual shops, or participate at concerts. One example, at a recent Muse concert, people could purchase the artist’s clothing and see the concert dressed in the same way. This technology will integrate live events.
Lino Prencipe, Director Digital & Business Development Sony Music Italy – Today, unlike in the past, artists are an asset at 360 degrees. Technological evolution has guided the consumption of content and allowed us to change our point of view. We can now speak to consumers. We have to understand what content users desire, as the Metaverse is all about enjoying content. The entertainment industry will have to place users at the centre of their experience. This will obviously also modify the music industry.
Mariella Nava, Singer and President “Suoni dall’Italia” – music has evolved, also thanks to new technology. We will have to improve audio and not only video to provide a high-quality musical experience.
Francesco Dobrovich, Creative Director, Videocittà – our audience wishes to enjoy an atmosphere that it does not experience in everyday life. And the immersive nature of this content is central, although, to date, technology is not fully sufficiently advanced. The visual aspect in the Metaverse will be fundamental to create new levels of dialogue with music.
Anna Lea Antolini, Professor, Sapienza University – I work on bodily experiential projects and believe that we will have to develop the sense of touch and gestures. I would be very interested in a development based on relation to the body.
After the session dedicated to the metaverse for cultural goods [see news: Testing the Metaverse at Binario F], yesterday, Binario F held the second meeting of the new Vagone FMD. From 01 to 100 in the Metaverse Programme, developed with Meta. We devised an involving schedule of activities to allow policymakers and stakeholders to explore how the metaverse works and verify possible applications in a range of areas, especially as a public utility service. Short interactive sessions provide participants with a complete experience that can be replicated various times to focus on new tools and scenarios.
Here are some of the ideas that emerged in the “From Metaverse to Eduverse” meeting, as summarized by Press Officer Onelia Onorati.
Costanza Andreini, Public Policy Manager Italy, Meta– we believe in a metaverse without barriers and with interconnected platforms. Our goal is to intervene before best practices are created to influence the experimental phase. We believe the metaverse may provide efficient learning experiences and we are investing in elements related to culture and education.
Matteo Uggeri, Gamification and e-Learning Expert, Fondazione Politecnico di Milano (in videoconference) – Teachers must become demiurgesof the virtual, where classes may allow students to create their own learning spaces. Soft skills include social skills to “learn to learn,” reflect on oneself, efficiently manage time and information, work with others constructively, remain resilient and manage learning. However, it will also be necessary to understand citizenship to learn and participate fully in civic and social life, based on the understanding of social concepts and structures.
Marina Foggia, Vice President, IISLuigi Einaudi, Rome – for those of us who have already participated in Project “Influencer for a Day,” the metaverse provided a basis for an internal challenge that became a strategy, as well as an educational practice from the eduverse.
Cristiana Angelini, Professor, IISLuigi Einaudi – Project “Influencer for a Day” included a STEAM course. Students were first involved in research and then worked in groups to develop their proposals. Following the feedback provided by classmates and professors, they finetuned their original ideas.
Licia Cianfriglia, Director, Partnership and Institutional Relations Coordinator, ANP– Soft skills are necessary in 3D graphics, design, mathematics and Italian. We need interoperability to remain free, but also authors to develop quality content. The experience is very cooperative at a didactic level but requires an underlying strategy.
Clara Vittori, School Administrator, LiceoMariano Buratti, Viterbo – we need to first ask ourselves why we need to adopt the metaverse. This reality could help us drive inclusionand sustainability.
Lucia Presilla, School Administrator, LiceoTalete, Rome – historical and artistic reconstructions will have to provide both aesthetic and philologically correct content.
Paolo Fatiganti, School Administrator, Istituto ComprensivoCanevari, Viterbo– start with validated content, such a visit to a virtual museum, to develop the ability to gather material, interact, and only subsequently begin to create. Everything should be open source and replicable, from users to creators.
Silvia Mazzoni, School Administrator, Istituto comprensivoTorgiano-Bettona, Torgiano (Perugia)– What does the metaverse allow us to do that we couldn’t before? We must be sure that every new technology be not only catchy, but also provide a true creative application.
Gianna Barbieri, Director General, MIUR – in this phase, we have activated a round of meetings with third parties, our suppliers, to adopt IT systems. We will act in coordination with schools. Because of its dedication to innovation and inclusion, even FMD will be part of our techical-scientific committee. The DG aims to help schools select the best resources.
Antonietta Zancan, Director, Advanced Education Office, MIUR – I have been working for four years with the ITS Academy, a two-year post-diploma short cycle for work insertion that is parallel to university studies. This is a reality in which technology can truly be useful to develop know-how for the professions of the future.
Michele Covolan, Director Personnel AFAM, Ministry of University and Research – I was struck by the musical implications of the metaverse. Think about the remote performances that were held during the pandemic, when we couldn’t meet in person.
Sonia Schirato, School Administrator, Liceo Plauto, Rome –One of the major issues will be exciting the professors that are called to employ the metaverse. This is a great eduational opportunity providinga wide range of tools to students.
Daniela Venturi, School Administrator, Sandro Pertini, Lucca –thanks to the opportunities provided by PNRR calls, each eacher will find a way to use this technology.
Manuela Cenciarini, School Administrator, IISPaolo Borsellino e Giovanni Falcone, Zagarolo (Rome) – class councils must involve teachers in developing and implementing projects in daily activities.
Claudio Naddeo, School Administrator, IIS F. Trani, Salerno – full support for the development of independent, inclusive courses. The metaverse can also be used for school meetings.
Cinzia Meatta, School Administrator, Istituto omnicomprensivoR. Laporta, Fabro (Terni) – I will transmit these stimuli to my school, notwithstanding the risk posed by a technological gap. We also need to concentrate on teacher training.
Conclusions by Alfonso Molina, Scientific Director, FMD– not all schools are at the same level, nor do they have the same equipment and projects. This is why we need to innovate with what is at hand, what already exists. The input we wish to transmit today is to begin a course starting from the points that have emerged today. Start from your experiences to understand at what point we are as schools. Exploit the opportunity provided by Binario F, where we have experimented with the metaverse thanks to Meta. In the future, this basis will provide an ideal spark to drive the market and companies to answer the needs of the world of education.
“I believe that enterprise is the key skill to orient oneself in this century of complexity. It’s the ability to understand oneself in an organized manner, create a personal ecosystem, and develop it over time. It is a type of prerequisite to orient oneself in studies, investing in specific training, developing a personal project or taking a step towards a new job. Starting from our personal sphere, we can help others understand and recompose misaligned dimensions related to the external world, including the “division between economic system, institutions and cultural orientation.”
The new post by Scientific Director Alfonso Molina, published on the Italian version of HuffPost, was inspired by an article by sociologist Mauro Magatti entitled “La centralità (perduta) del lavoro” [The (Lost) Focus on Work] published on the Corriere della Sera (Oct. 7, 2022).
WORK IS ONLY ADDRESSED ON DAILIES The challenge today is to educate ourselves to self-awareness and to the complexity of a changing world, helping youth to orient themselves in a society in continuous and rapid transformation and marked by uncertainty. by Alfonso Molina HuffPost, Oct. 13, 2022

Team building exercises with Tool Beez and the Mentimeter Platform were used to explore the dimensions of self-enterprise. The Personal Ecosystem Canvas (PEC), a tool that helps to align personal ecosystems with the social and professional spheres, and the challenges of our times, allowed students to explore aspects of their personality such as creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork . They represented their strengths and weaknesses with coloured bricks to present themselves dynamically and in an essential, yet profound, manner.
“I find it fascinating and demanding to work with youth,” explains Cecilia Stajano. “They know how to seriously question themselves. They launch challenges that must be accepted. You have to find an answer for them because it will help them shape their future.”
During the pandemic, educators feely doubly committed to discuss the “suspended life projects” of young people, according to a definition found in the recent report on the condition of youth in Italy (La condizione giovanile in Italia, Rapporto Giovani, Il Mulino). “Luckily, young people still have high expectations, and we must not let them down if we wish to see a generation fit for the future that awaits us all,” adds Cecilia. “Thanks for having questioned me once again!”
“I firmly believe that university orientation should be reviewed. It should become a continuous process integrated in a multimedial dimension. It should stimulate thinking and open attitudes in students, driving them to discover, explore, experiment and test, learn, and experience until they find a path founded on motivation and aspiration. I have summarized a part of this multidimensional outlook in the Life Education Model, which integrates various levels and elements available to our educational processes. In this content, entrepreneurialism plays a strategic role …”
On the HuffPost, Prof. Alfonso Molina, Scientific Director of the Fondazione Mondo Digitale, reflects on university orientation. Are the new generations capable of orienting themselves? What tools can they use? As adults, how can we support and accompany them in their educational and professional decisions?
